The university was founded in 1969 as part of the Trier-Kaiserslautern dual university. In 1970 teaching began with 191 students. The first president was the experimental physicist Helmut Ehrhardt , who remained in office until 1981. The university was relocated to the premises of the former pedagogical college, but construction of a new university campus began as early as 1971 above the city on the edge of the Palatinate Forest , which has continued to grow to this day. In 1975, due to the rapid growth, the dual university was separated, making the University of Kaiserslautern independent and the only university in Rhineland-Palatinate with an engineering-technical orientation.
With the amendment of the Rhineland-Palatinate University Framework Act on September 1, 2003, the technical-engineering orientation of the university was taken into account and the University of Kaiserslautern was renamed the Technical University of Kaiserslautern.
